Those
that live with migraine headaches, either by having them personally or having to
live alongside loved ones who do, have a pretty tough time, but there are ways in
which you can help the sufferer.
The
first thing to remember is that migraine headaches are very painful and even the
smallest of noises can make the symptoms worse. Turning down the television or
radio is the first thing that should be done to help the sufferer of migraine
headaches, and make sure that you are quiet as well. Try not to talk to the
person that is in pain unless it absolutely necessary and where possible, turn
off or turn down the volume on house phones and cellular phones.
Once
you have made sure that no noise can affect the victim of migraine headaches,
look to see if there is any bright light. It is a good idea to move the person
to a quiet and dark room, where the drapes are closed and no light can seep
through as bright lights can make the whole experience much more painful.
If
the sufferer has gone to bed, think about putting a bowl or bucket next to the
bed. This sounds pretty awful, but migraine headaches can very often bring
nausea and vomiting, so by having the bucket next to the bed the sufferer will
not have to move very far should he or she feel the need to be sick. Just
remember to clean it out for them to ensure no lingering
smells!
There
are medications that can be administered for those that suffer with migraine
headaches and if the person has been prescribed these, try and find them and
bring them to the ill person along with a glass of water. If there are no
medicines available, look for some over-the-counter painkillers but make sure
you let the person know what he or she is taking.
If
no painkillers or medication can be retrieved, try an icepack on the head of the
migraine sufferer and see if that doesn't make a difference. There are also
herbal remedies that can be tried, such as ginger powder diluted in a glass of
water. Water is essential for those that are suffering as migraine headaches
have a tendency to last for a few hours or even a few days and you do not want
the sufferer to become dehydrated. They probably won't be wanting much in the
way of food, but make sure that there is something dry and easy to make, such as
toast for the periods that they are not vomiting to line the stomach.
Above
all, leave the person that is suffering from migraine headaches alone and make
sure others in the same home know to do this as well. They may be snappy and
irritable, but it is not their fault and the best thing to do is to leave them
to sleep and keep noise down to a bare minimum.
